Kincaid Mounds Historic Site Archaeology Field Day

Kincaid Mounds Historic Site, Massac County, Illinois
The Kincaid Mounds Archaeological Site was a large Native American town occupied from AD
1050 to 1450. During this time, a dozen large and many small mounds were built. The site is a
National Historic Landmark and Illinois Historic Site and, part of which is under the
management of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. There is an observation and
interpretation area with interpretive panels providing information on the Historic Site.
The Kincaid Mounds Support Organization, whose members volunteer their services for the
preservation and management of the site, will host a Field Day on Saturday, October 5, from
9:00 to 3:00 pm. There will be artifacts on display, information tables, and formal programs
offered at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The 10:00 a.m. program will be given by Dr. Paul Welch,
retired Chair and Associate Professor of Anthropology Southern Illinois University Carbondale,
the 1:00 pm program will be presented by Dr. Brian M. Butler, retired Director of the Center for
Archaeological Investigation at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Part of the
presentations, which is optional, includes a walking tour to Mound 8; hiking shoes are
recommended. The program is free of charge and there will be restroom facilities, but no
refreshments sold.
The Kincaid Mounds are located approximately 10 miles east of Brookport, Illinois, along the
Ohio River Scenic Byway. From Interstate 24, take the Metropolis/Brookport Exit, travel east on
US 45 towards Brookport and before entering Brookport, turn left on Unionville Road. Go 6.25
miles through Unionville to New Cut Road. At New Cut Road turn right (south) and travel 3.6
miles to Kincaid Mounds Road, turn left (east) on Kincaid Mounds Road and go .6 mile to the
