REPORT OF INCIDENT
On 04/26/12 the Massac
County Sheriff's Department met with Sheila Richey and Mark
Benson at the Massac County Sheriffs Department. Sheila is
the president of the Kincaid Mounds Support Organization.
Mark is the CO-treasurer and the Vice President of Field
Operations. Sheila reported that someone had trespassed on
the land and dug up 2 spots on Mound 1 0.
The spots dug up on
Mound 10 are located on the North side of Mound 10. Mound 10
is a dirt mound and would not have contained any artifacts.
Therefore, it is not believed that any artifacts were found.
The two dig holes are shallow and narrow. The looter dug for
a short period of time. The ground on Mound 1 0 is very hard
right now, meaning the looter would have had a hard time
digging. No other spots on the site appeared to have been
dug up.
It should be noted that the land is
clearly marked with No Trespassing signs. Only those with
permits are allowed access into the site for digging. Sheila
provided a typed statement she had prepared prior to coming
into the Sheriffs Department.
Sheila also provided photos of the
damaged area.
An article regarding the looting on the site
was placed on the Massac County Sheriffs Department website
in hopes of obtaining information about looters .
